GCAS College Dublin

Department of Philosophy & Psychoanalysis

Psychoanalysis is a revolution of philosophical and scientific thought about  the human mind which focuses on hidden internal mechanisms. It has become the basis for today’s most advanced scientific and philosophical theories and trends that explore the inner world of human experience. Psychoanalysis reveals that behind every obvious matter that concerns the human mind, there are undiscovered mechanisms. It is well known that Freud “discovered” one of the most fundamental concepts of psychoanalysis: the unconscious, however psychoanalysis is not at all a theory in the sense of a collection of  existing knowledge. At its foundation, it is the awareness that there is always something else, another yet unknown mechanism of the human mind. In this sense, psychoanalysis is an inexhaustible project of research and clinical work. By constantly deepening our self-knowledge and the revealing and development of our inner capacities, we gain the ability to transform our patterns of behavior, and thus the world in which we live.
