Overview
About the Program
A doctorate built around your research question, not a departmental agenda.
Four principles shape every GCAS PhD: complete flexibility, a research-only structure, a project you design yourself, and a debt-free model that keeps your attention on scholarship.
100% Online & Fully Flexible
Complete your online PhD in the humanities from anywhere in the world. There is no required coursework—your time is devoted entirely to reading, research, and writing, supported by individualized supervision and a global scholarly environment.
Research-Only Doctorate
A three-year PhD focused exclusively on producing an original doctoral dissertation. There are no taught modules, exams, or artificial milestones—from day one you work on your research question under expert academic guidance.
Design Your Own Research Path
You design your own doctoral project rather than fitting into a predefined agenda. We then match you with an expert supervisor whose research aligns with your interests, so you can pursue genuinely original, interdisciplinary work.
Debt-Free & Career-Focused
A debt-free doctoral model keeps your focus on scholarship. Alongside supervision, we offer career support for academic publishing, postdoctoral pathways, teaching, independent research, creative practice, or leadership beyond the university.

Supervision
How Doctoral Supervision Works at GCAS
Most doctoral programs assign you a supervisor and expect your research to fit their agenda. GCAS reverses that order: your research question comes first, and we find the expert who fits it. Read more about supervision at GCAS →
Year One
Narrowing the question
In your first year you work with a GCAS supervisor whose job is to help you narrow your topic and bring your literature review to the standard required to proceed. That review is the foundation of everything that follows: it establishes what has already been said in your field, and where the opening is for you to say something new.
You move on to Years 2 and 3 once that groundwork is secure—not before.
Years Two and Three
Choosing your dissertation supervisor
Years 2 and 3 are given over to writing the dissertation itself, and you help choose the supervisor who will guide it. That supervisor may be a GCAS faculty member, or may be based elsewhere entirely—what matters is that they are a genuine expert in your research field, not that they happen to sit on our staff list.
The right supervisor gives you rigorous guidance on the thesis and, just as importantly, opens a professional network that carries into your working life after the PhD.
Meet the supervisors
Philosophers, psychoanalysts, political theorists, anthropologists, and mathematicians across sixteen countries—a sample of who you might work with, and what becomes possible when expertise, not administration, decides the match.

Consulting & Strategic Leadership
+Translate advanced research skills into high-level consulting, strategy, and advisory roles. PhD-level training fosters systems thinking, analytical precision, and ethical judgment—qualities increasingly sought in complex organizational environments.
Writing, Publishing & Media
+Produce influential work as an author, journalist, editor, or public intellectual. Doctoral research develops the capacity to communicate complex ideas clearly and responsibly in a media landscape often shaped by speed rather than truth.
Education & Intellectual Leadership
+Teach and lead in secondary, post-secondary, and alternative educational settings. PhD graduates play a vital role in cultivating critical thinking, scientific literacy, and philosophical depth across generations of learners.

Year 2
Teaching Opportunities
During the second year of the PhD, doctoral researchers may have the opportunity to teach on GCAS programmes at both BA and MA level. Teaching alongside your research builds the classroom experience that academic and professional employers look for, and gives you a direct role in the GCAS academic community.
We do our best to provide teaching opportunities for every PhD researcher who wants one, but availability depends on programme needs each year, so teaching opportunities cannot be guaranteed.
Why Doctoral Research Matters Today
In an era marked by misinformation, ideological polarization, and the growing dismissal of science and expertise, PhD-level research is more necessary than ever. Doctoral scholars are trained not merely to hold opinions, but to test claims, evaluate evidence, and sustain intellectual rigor under pressure. At GCAS, the PhD is understood as a public responsibility: to defend truth against distortion, complexity against simplification, and reasoned inquiry against the erosion of trust in knowledge itself.

International Research Presentation & Publication Pathways
GCAS provides PhD researchers with regular opportunities to present their work-in-progress and completed research at its annual international seminars and academic events held in cities such as Paris, Florence, and other global intellectual centers. These gatherings place doctoral researchers in direct dialogue with leading scholars, practitioners, and peers from across disciplines.
GCAS also actively encourages the development of doctoral dissertations into published books and offers guidance and sponsorship support for this process, helping researchers bring their work to a wider scholarly and public audience.
