Elena Piatenko, MD

Elena Piatenko, MD, is a physician, medical educator, and researcher. She designs and delivers case-based medical education, building USMLE-aligned curricula, assessments, and teaching frameworks that strengthen clinical reasoning, prevention, and patient safety.

Dr. Piatenko brings international experience across Eastern Europe and the South Caucasus, the Caribbean, and North America, collaborating with colleagues and communities in diverse care environments. Her public health-oriented clinical work includes supporting patients in complex circumstances and contributing to care systems serving refugee and displaced populations, grounded in dignity-centered and culturally responsive practice. She has engaged in hurricane preparedness and health-system continuity planning, linking climate-related disruption to operational readiness, risk reduction, and community resilience.

Her research interests span infectious diseases, internal medicine, immunology, and gastroenterology-adjacent topics, and the responsible use of AI in clinical decision-making, including evaluation, safety, bias awareness, ethics, and adoption in real clinical workflows. Her public health work is further informed by collaboration with the Global Burden of Disease study, strengthening her focus on measurable impact and outcomes. Her approach integrates prevention, equity, and making decisions in the real world.

Within GCAS, she contributes an interdisciplinary perspective connecting clinical medicine, public health, education, and ethical innovation. As a mentor, Dr. Piatenko is recognized for clear, structured, motivating supervision. Dr. Piatenko’s academic work emphasizes evidence-based learning, clinical reasoning, and patient safety, translating complex medical concepts into structured, high-impact teaching.

Outside of work, she enjoys exploring food cultures, crochet, travel, nature walks, and good coffee.
