GCAS-RII awards our own degrees

There are three terms or semesters per year

Term 1: September to December         Term 2:  January to March         Term 3:  April to June

General Summary of Program Requirements

To complete the PhD program in Social and Political Thought at GCAS University you must:

1. Meet monthly with your advisor and Dissertation Small Group (DSG)

2. Formally present your research within GCAS University and at an academic conference not associated with GCAS University

3. Pass Doctoral Comprehensive Examinations 

4. Publish an article in a peer-reviewed Journal

5. There is a residential requirement for examinations during our residential seminars or annual Summer Institutes.

6. Pass language examinations (when required by your advisor)

Year 1 Requirements:

  1. Presentation (1st term)

  2. Monthly Meetings with Advisor

  3. Monthly Meeting(s) with Dissertation Small Group (DSG)

  4. Finalized Dissertation Proposal

  5. Comprehensive Exam Essay  

  6. Take Comprehensive Exam

  7. Complete Annual Review with Supervisor

Year 2 Requirements:

  1. Monthly Meetings with Advisor

  2. Monthly Meetings with Dissertation Small Group (DSG)

  3. Year-End Research Presentation (April)

  4. Complete Annual Review with Supervisor

Year 3 Requirements:

  1. Monthly Meetings with Advisor

  2. Monthly Meetings with Dissertation Small Group (DSG)

  3. Complete Annual Review with Supervisor

  4. Dissertation Defense

Further Requirements:

Two Public Presentations of work from the dissertation (one presentation must happen at a GCAS Lecture & Seminar Series; the other should be a conference or similar event in the student’s field).

  3. Meet in Dissertation Small  Group (DSG)

November

  1. Meet with advisor

  2. Begin Work on Dissertation Proposal

  3. Meet in Dissertation Small Group

December

  1. Meet with advisor

  2. Continue Work on Dissertation Proposal  

  3. Meet in Dissertation Small Group

  4. 15 Minute Presentation to DSG

Year 1: Term 2

January

  1. Meet with advisor

  2. Continue Work on Dissertation Proposal

  3. Begin work on Comprehensive Exam Essay

February

  1. Meet with advisor

  2. Continue Work on Dissertation Proposal

  3. Continue Work on Comprehensive Exam Essay

  4. Meet in Dissertation Small Group (DSG)

March

  1. Meet with advisor

  2. Continue Work on Dissertation Proposal

  3. Meet in DSG

Year 1: Term 3

April

  1. Meet with advisor

  2. Meet in DSG

  3. Finalize Dissertation Proposal and Comprehensive Exam Essay

May

  1. Meet with advisor to discuss final preparations for the Comprehensive Exam

June

  1. Take Comprehensive Exam

  2. Complete Annual Review with Advisor


Year 2: Term 1
