GCAS BA <\/a>combines foundational study with the opportunity to pursue particular questions in greater depth. Students encounter philosophy, literature, social and environmental thought, ethics, political theory, culture, psychoanalysis, theology, and contemporary debates about technology and society.<\/p>\n\n\n\nThe three areas of focus offer distinct routes through the degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Students in Philosophy<\/strong> work with questions about truth, knowledge, ethics, politics, technology, human experience, and the history of ideas. They learn how to read arguments closely, identify assumptions, and develop positions of their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\nStudents in Literature<\/strong> explore language, narrative, culture, history, and imagination. Literature becomes a way of understanding how people make sense of power, memory, identity, conflict, social transformation, and ecological change.<\/p>\n\n\n\nStudents in Social-Environmental Studies<\/strong> investigate the social, political, ethical, and cultural dimensions of ecological crisis. They can bring environmental concerns into relation with questions of economy, justice, technology, collective life, and global responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\nThese routes are connected rather than isolated. A student interested in artificial intelligence might work across philosophy, ethics, political theory, literature, and environmental studies. A student interested in climate justice might draw on social theory, ecology, history, culture, and political thought. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The GCAS Academic Model<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\nThe BA in Interdisciplinary Studies follows three stages: Acquire Knowledge, Apply Knowledge, and Create Knowledge<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\nStudents begin by acquiring knowledge. This means developing the basic practices of serious academic work: close reading, research, academic writing, argumentation, discussion, and critical reflection. Students encounter different traditions and methods while learning how to work carefully with texts, concepts, and evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They then apply knowledge. At this stage, students bring what they have learned to bear on contemporary questions. They begin to make stronger connections between disciplines and develop a clearer sense of the problems they want to pursue. Theory becomes a way of understanding the world more precisely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Finally, students create knowledge through independent research. The degree culminates in an original bachelor\u2019s thesis and thesis defence. Students formulate a research question, engage with relevant scholarship, develop an argument, and defend their work, with a goal of achieving intellectual independence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
