The Doctorate in Phonosophy is essentially an advanced degree in electronic/acoustic music composition or praxis. However, the title of Phonosophy suggests a diminished concern with forms, and more emphasis on an higher level engagement with the person and processes of organizing sounds as an exploration of the human/sonic interface - beyond what more conventional academic settings are willing to test. In combining sound (phono) and wisdom (sophia), we aim to inspire a global network of phonosophers who realize the need and vision for this advanced platform and can mentor students toward the threshold of their own unique and (trans)personal creative horizons.

The PhD program is primarily a music composition one with a writing component. Applicants are expected to bring an already high degree of engagement in the field of music composition or sonic practice, while our faculty accompanies creative candidates toward a unique professional or strictly personal outcome. The first year will involve participation in online seminars and optionally a summer residency held on the grounds of our partner institution, the beautiful Canyon Institute in Santa Barbara. Depending on the student’s previous work, required course-work may be assigned. Qualified candidates will begin studies in the Fall of 2019.
